Our mission is to provide inclusive art, self-advocacy, and social programming for adults with disabilities in the community. Barrier-Free's inclusive design brings together individuals of all abilities to create, express, and achieve.
Vision
To live in a world where inclusive programming models are seen in all aspects of society, allowing individuals of all abilities to feel valued and respected as contributing members of society.
Diversity Commitment
At Barrier-Free, we are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all individuals, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability, or socioeconomic status. We recognize that diversity is essential for achieving our mission of creating a world without barriers for people with disabilities.
We value and celebrate the unique perspectives and experiences that each individual brings to our organization, and we strive to create opportunities for everyone to participate fully and equally in all aspects of our work. We are dedicated to promoting equity and justice, and to challenging systemic barriers and discrimination that prevent individuals from reaching their full potential. At Barrier-Free, we believe that by embracing diversity and inclusion, we can achieve greater impact and bring about positive change in our communities. We are committed to fostering a culture of respect, empathy, and understanding, and to continuously learning and growing as an organization.
DEI Initiatives
Barrier-Free continues to play a vital role in the Juneteenth and Pride celebrations in both Sykesville and Westminster. By actively participating and sponsoring these events, Barrier-Free advocates for diversity, acceptance, and equality. These celebrations serve as platforms to raise awareness about neurodiversity, LGBTQ+ rights, and the importance of creating a more inclusive society that celebrates all individuals' unique identities.
Barrier-Free's founders serve on the Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (JEDI) committee as part of the Downtown Sykesville Connection. Moreover, Barrier-Free has expanded its reach to Baltimore during July's Disability Pride Month collaboration with Make Studio, an art studio for neurodivergent artists. By partnering with Make Studio, Barrier-Free aims to create more opportunities for neurodivergent individuals to showcase their talents and creativity.
